Obituary for Dorothy M. Evans "Dot" McGhee

Millerton – Dorothy M. “Dot” Evans McGhee, 104, a lifelong Millerton resident died peacefully on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at Sharon Hospital in Sharon, CT. Dot worked as an office manager for Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. at their local office in Millerton for eight years and as a clerk for the United States Postal Service in Millerton for over thirty years following her return from active military service. Dot retired from the post office in 1977, a job that she truly loved.

Born November 13, 1912 in Millerton, she was the daughter of the late Charles Robert and Georgeana (Clark) Evans. Dot resided in her childhood home on South Elm Avenue for over 104 years. A home her mother and father built in 1913 when she was eleven months old. She was a graduate of Millerton High School class of 1931and Albany Business College. During WWII she was active with a group of local women supporting the war effort and enlisted in the United State Marine Corps Women’s Reserve on August 2, 1943 and received her basic training at Camp Lejeune, NC. She was assigned to the Eastern Headquarters in Philadelphia, PA with a rank of Sergeant and served there until her honorable discharge on December 8, 1945. On December 25, 1945 at the Smithfield Presbyterian Church in Amenia she married Malcolm G. McGhee who had just returned from serving with the United States Navy “Seabees” in the Pacific Theater. Mr. McGhee died August 25, 2000. Dot was a seventy year member of the Millerton Grange and Millerton Presbyterian Church. She is also an honorary member of the Millerton Legion Post 178, AMVETS and the Marine Corps League Auxiliary in Canaan, CT. She enjoyed reading and growing flowers and spending time with her loving family and friends, visiting, talking and sharing stories about Millerton and days gone by. Once asked by a reported what her secret is to long life, she replied, “There isn’t any – you just make it one day at a time and keep plugging along”. “Try hard and you’ll make it, I’ve been fortunate – a good, whole life. I can’t complain”

Dot is survived by many nieces and nephews, among them her nephew David McGhee and his wife Theyal of Millerton and many friends.
