Obituary for Walter Kilmer Sr.

Millerton – Walter Kilmer, Sr., 80, a lifelong area resident, passed away peacefully at Sharon Hospital in Sharon, CT following a brief illness. Walter was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Born April 10, 1943 in Millerton, NY he was the son of the late Sidney and Alberta (Wessley) Kilmer. He attended Millerton Schools and on November 1, 1962 at North East Baptist Church, he married Shirley (Goewey) Kilmer. Mrs. Kilmer survives at home.

Mr. Kilmer started his career as a local farmer. He began working for Tri-Wall Container in Wassaic, NY in 1978. His career lasted 27 years at Tri-Wall where he was a corrugator operator, he retired in 2005. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and he loved to farm the land. He was most proud of growing potatoes every year and had a crop planted for this year as well. Mr. Kilmer was a life member of the Millerton Fire Company. His family would like to thank the fire company members, members of the Rescue Squad and Northern Dutchess Paramedics for their care and compassion during this difficult time.

In addition to his wife Shirley, Mr. Kilmer is survived by two daughters, Laurie Adams of Poughkeepsie, NY and Tammy Gazzoli (Rick) of Colbrook, NH; his son, Walter Kilmer, Jr. (Kelly) of Millerton; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his brother, Neil Kilmer (Dawn) of Millerton and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Sidney Kilmer, Jr. and a grandson, William McWhirt, Jr.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 from 6-8pm at the Scott D. Conklin Funeral Home, 37 Park Avenue, Millerton, NY. The Millerton Fire Company will conduct services at 7:15 pm during visitation. A funeral service will take place at 7:30pm. Pastor Rick Totten will officiate. Burial will be private.
