Obituary for Roy Richard Sherwood

Roy Richard Sherwood passed away peacefully on October 19, 2017 at the age of 85. Roy was born on June 11, 1932 along with his twin brother Bill in Salisbury, CT. He was the son of Charles Stanley Sherwood and Grace Webb Sherwood. Roy was married to Phyllis E. Germond and second wife, Louise Archibald, both of whom predeceased him.

Roy was a lifelong resident of Salisbury, Connecticut. He attended both Salisbury Central School and Housatonic Valley Regional High School. His lifelong passion was ski jumping, exploring all the mountains in the northwest corner of CT and promoting the Salisbury Winter Sports Association (SWSA). Roy won the National Ski Jumping Championship in Ishpeming, Michigan in 1954, which qualified him as an Olympian, competing in the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina, Italy.

Roy worked for the Town of Salisbury highway department for over 30 years. Upon retiring, Roy became a snowbird, flying to Florida for the winters but always came home for the Salisbury Ski Jump. He was an avid sportsman who loved to ski, hunt, fish and boat. He loved to travel the world, attending ski jumps in Lake Placid and Bear Mountain. His last great trip was a cruise to Alaska with his daughter Merrilee and dear friends, Rosina, Dennis and Cathy, in which they flew over the glaciers. He spent the last few years of his life in his home watching his beloved wildlife at the base of the ski jump and enjoying his pontoon boat on Lakeville Lake.

Roy is survived by his two daughters, Merrilee Sherwood Alexander and Kim Louise Sherwood, both of Salisbury, CT and stepdaughter, Robain Dionne also of Salisbury. In addition, he is survived by two granddaughters, Carrie and Laura Alexander, one great granddaughter, Pyper Alexander Bernoi, and only one of his seven siblings, Frank (Butch) Lee Sherwood, a resident of Noble Horizons. Roy is also survived by nephews and nieces: Chris Sherwood of Portland, OR, Mike Sherwood of Salem, OR, Chet Warland of Denver, CO, Howard Paine of Salisbury, CT, Tom Paine of Taconic, CT, Jacob Sherwood of Torrington, CT and Holly Elliott of Georgia.

The family wishes to thank all the many people who assisted Roy in his final years.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, both wives and six siblings: George Sherwood, Elisabeth (Betty) Warland, Lois Paine, Charles (Stubby) Sherwood, William (Billy) Sherwood, Grace (Ginger) Semar, and nephews: Robert Paine, Jack, Jimmy and Jerry Semar.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Salisbury Winter Sports Association, PO Box 196, Salisbury, CT 06068 would be appreciated.

A Celebration of Roy’s Life will be held at the Salisbury Town Grove on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at 2:00 PM. Burial will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Scott D. Conklin Funeral Home, 37 Park avenue, Millerton, NY 12546. To send an online condolence please visit www.conklinfuneralhome.com.
