Valatie – Roger Evans Bradley, 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 11, 2022 in Philmont, NY. A resident of Valatie, NY, Mr. Bradley was born in Sharon, CT on April 23, 1932. He was the son of the late William J. and Marjorie F. Bradley.
He resided with his parents in the Town of Salisbury, CT and moved with them to Millerton, NY in 1939. A graduate of Millerton High School, he entered the United States Army during the Korean War, proudly serving from 1952 to 1954, including 16 months in Korea with the 8th Army, Headquarters Company, KCAC, 8201 Army Unit. He was awarded the following medals and awards; United States Defense Medal, Korean War Service Medal with one Battle Star, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Korea (ROK) War Service Medal and the ROK Presidential Unit Citation. He also received the State of New York Conspicuous Service Medal and the State of New York Medal for Merit in addition to the ROK Ambassador for Peace Medal.
On June 28, 1958 in Norfolk, CT he married Mary Gloria Vernali. Mrs. Bradley passed away on June 28, 2021.Upon his return to civilian life, he pursued a career in sales, retiring from Arnoff Moving & Storage in 1996. He is the father of two sons, James J. (Jay) Bradley of Lakeville, CT and Keith F. Bradley and his wife Lisa of Arizona and grandfather of two grandsons, Stephen J. Bradley and Evan J. Bradley.
Roger was a longtime civically active member of the Millerton community. He was a Past Commander of Millerton Legion Post 178, Past Vice-Commander of the Columbia County Chapter 283 of the American Legion, Korean War Veterans Association, Past President and Secretary of the Millerton Lions Club, Past President of the North East Republican Club and was an Honorary Member and Past Secretary of the Millerton Fire Company. He also served on the Millerton Village Board of Trustees. As President of the Millerton Lions Club he was instrumental in construction of the Little League Field and as Commander of the Millerton Legion Post 178 he oversaw the construction of the home of Post 178.
Moving to Valatie, NY in 1992, he continued his civic service as an active member of the Kinderhook Lodge of Elks and was awarded that Lodges highest honor, Elk of the Year for 1996-1997. He also received the Elks Grand Exalted Ruler’s Outstanding Service Commendation for 2001-2002. He was also a member of the Empire State Society, Sons of the American Revolution, Columbia-Mid Hudson Valley Chapter. He was also a member and Vice-Commander of the American Legion Post 184 in Hudson and a member of the Ghent VFW.
In addition to his sons and grandsons, Roger is survived by four sisters; Janet Silvernale, Marsha Phillips, Sandra Thurston and Diane Walters, his dear cousin, Elizabeth Simmons and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Travis Bradley and two sisters; Joan Riley and Elizabeth Layton.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2022 from 5-7pm at the Scott D. Conklin Funeral Home, 37 Park Avenue, Millerton, NY. The Millerton Legion will conduct a service at 7pm. A funeral service will take place on Friday, June 17, 2022 at 10:30am at the funeral home. Burial with standard military honors will follow at Salisbury Cemetery, Under Mountain Road, Salisbury, CT.
