Amenia – Joan Harriet Houghtaling, 88, a ten year resident of Amenia, NY and a longtime area resident died Sunday, March 13, 2022 at her home in Amenia. Joan worked as a self-employed home health care aide for many years and also worked as a private housekeeper locally.

Born November 18, 1933 with her twin brother, John Newman in the Village of Ashaway, in the Town of Hopkinton, Rhode Island, she was the daughter of the late Ernest H. and Harriet (Tattersall) Newman. She attended school in Rhode Island and was an avid reader who enjoyed spending time with her beloved dog, Cookie. Joan will be deeply missed by her loving family.

Joan is survived by beloved sister, Shirley Hurley and her brother, Joseph Sterling; two nephews, Michael Hurley and his wife Shalay and Donald VonAhn and his girlfriend Judy Brandt. In addition to her parents, Joan was also predeceased by her twin brother, John Newman.

There are no calling hours. Funeral services and burial will be private at the Goshen Center Cemetery, Goshen, Connecticut. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Scott D.
