Millerton – Edna Sophia Heck Johnson, 97, a three year resident of Millerton, NY formerly of Berry Homes and Grant City, Staten Island, NY and most recently of Lakewood, NJ died peacefully on February 4, 2022 at her daughter Kathy’s home in Millerton surrounded by her loving daughter and son-in-law.
Born December 30, 1924 in Manhattan, NY she was the daughter of the late Edward and Henrietta (Fritz) Heck. Edna attended Washington Irving Elementary School and was a graduate of Washington Irving High School. On December 14, 1946 she married John Joseph Johnson, following their marriage they resided in Washington Heights until 1955 when they moved to Staten Island. They retired and resided in Leisure Village East in Lakewood for over 20 years. Mr. Johnson (NYPD- Retired) died on November 16, 2013. Their loving marriage lasted 67 years.
Edna was a very active member of St. Christopher’s Church in Staten Island, where she started the girls’ basketball program during the 1960’s through the 1970’s. She was also very involved in the Ladies Guild. While living in Leisure Village East during retirement, she was a volunteer ambulance driver and did quilting and crocheting for charity. She also was an avid golfer and won many golf titles well into her 90’s. Edna also enjoyed her yearly vacations with her Ocean Beach family and will forever be remembered as being the life of every party especially when doing her famous bubble dance.
Edna is survived by her four children and their spouses; Kathryn Brown and husband Joseph, Patricia Daggett and husband Robert, Joanne Haggerty and husband Michael McNamara and Jack Johnson and wife Gale. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and Aunt Edna to 20 nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Edna was predeceased by her sister Margaret Costello and Edward Heck.
